PATIENT COMMON COMPLAINS IN DENTISTRY

It's a known fact since the beginning of the time that 90% people are lazy, ignorant and careless.

Whenever there are some difficulties or problems related to anything, people just don't care they ignore it. Eventually a time comes when they will notice the problem. Because that problem now increased with time and now it causing PAIN. 

I said 90% people are like this, but the remaining 10% believe in prevention of the problems before it lead to pain. 

Similarly, in dentistry  patients comes to dental clinic only when they feel tooth pain.

You must be thinking "what is this? ofcourse I ll go to dental clinic when there is tooth pain. Where else would I go?"

Question is not where it's when should you go. If you would had visited dental clinic before tooth pain for regular check up treatment would have been of significantly less cost and time. It's a common knowledge if anything left unattended will cause pain in future, which may be either physical or mental. I will discuss this topic further in detail in another posts.

For now let se list of most common complaint patients have while visiting dental clinic:

1)Dental pain

Dental pain can be mainly from Deep dental decay, swelling in gums due poor oral hygiene, trauma, ulcers, tooth fracture, jaw bone fracture and all pain that are closely related in mouth reason.

(2) Need Cleaning of teeth.

 In this patient mostly don't have pain they want there teeth to look clean from stains and tar tar depositions.

(3) Sensitivity in teeth

 Sensitivity is different from pain. In this condition pain only lasts few seconds due to the triggering factors and then gone. Triggering factors examples are Cold or hot water, some sweets, cold air on affected teeth.

(4) Cavity in tooth.

 It is the early stage of dental decay associated with no pain. Rare people comes with this complain because there is no pain. This is mostly discovered in routine dental check up and accordingly treated in comparatively less cost. If left untreated later with increasing decay it leads to pain and accordingly treatment time and cost also increases.

(5)Food lodgement 

 Food debris may stuck in cavity in tooth.

Food debris also stuck between tooth if cavity occurred in between teeth contact area.

(6) Missing tooth or teeth

There is no tooth left save, because either 1.tooth had been removed (extracted) or it has fallen itself. 2.Patients with bad or poor oral hygiene, if not attended in time by doctor then supporting structures that is bone and gum will become weak and teeth will fall eventually. 3. Also it can fall by some traumatic accidents.

(7) Bad mouth breath.

There are some few reasons for bad mouth breathing.

     1) Again bad oral hygiene

     2) Dental Caries

     3) Food lodgement

     4) A stomach issue called             GERD

(8) Malalignment of teeth

   

  Many people have badly arranged teeth. Reasons

    1) Most common reason is Genetic.

    2) In time with poor bone support teeth get drifted from its original position to another positions, it's called as Pathological Migration of teeth.

(9) Teeth whitening

      Now pay attention it's very important that, Teeth whitening and teeth cleaning are 2 different treatment procedure. 

Cleaning of teeth is done for good health of gums in relation to teeth. It does not change the original colour of the teeth.

While teeth whitening required an application of chemical on teeth surface so that it's colour become much lighter colour than its original colour.

(10) Gum enlargement

       Again gum enlargement is mostly due to bad oral hygiene. But in some cases it may be due to systemic condition or allergy.

(11) Gum discoloration

      

      Gum discoloration occurs due to too much the position of melanin pigment with time which is completely normal. People with gummy smile doesn't look good with the discoloration of gum because it affects the aesthetic of smile.

(12) Swelling extraoral and intraoral.

       Intra oral swelling are mostly present on the palate which is associated with the nearby painful decaying tooth. Sometime a small swelling is present on the gum with discharge of pus associated with the adjacent decaying tooth.

       Extraoral swelling, it is also mostly associated with the nearby decay of the tooth.

Some swelling many because of trauma and very rarely because of cancer.

(13) Mouth ulcer

        There are also various types of mouth ulcers

    (1) A simple small mouth ulcer can come without any reason and is automatically gone in 7 to 14 days.

    (2) Bad stomach can also cause mouth ulcer.

    (3) Ulcers associated with viral infection.

    (4) A cut caused by Sharp tooth can cause a traumatic ulcer.

    (5) ulcer associated with precancerous conditions or cancerous condition.

    

(14) Burning sensation

        Mostly in Asian countries people have a habit of chewing gutka (betel quid). It leads to a systematic cancerous condition called OSMF. These people mostly complain of burning sensation on cheek in mouth.

      Also due to some reason if the taste buds of the tongue is is not present, there will be burning sensation on the tongue also. Of course without taste buds loss of taste sensation also present.

(15) Complain of pain in jaw joint or jaw dislocation.

(16) Smile design

        Some patient complaint to so simply improve the aesthetics of smile, it's called smile designing which involves various approach of treatments.

(17) Regular Dental check up

      Every 6 month. It may vary from patient to patient which will be known after check up.

(18) Miscellaneous

      

      1) Dental jewel

      2) Mouth gaurd

      3) Dental Cosmetics.
