DENTAL CARIES

Dental caries or tooth decay with pain is the most common complain of the patient in dental clinic.

Let's start when the decay of the tooth has just started with no pain. Tooth decay can be smaller or bigger (deep), so I will explain it in stages with its treatment.

1) Cavity is limited to the enamel

  • Small black spot or line on the tooth.
  • No pain is present
  • Patient complaints black spot on the tooth.
  • Treatment is caries removal and filling.
2) Cavity extended to dentin

  • Slightly deeper decay
  • Patient complain pain sensation while drinking cold and hot water, eating sweet and also food lodgement.
  • Pain only last for few seconds and gone.
  • Again treatment will be same caries removal and filling.
3) Cavity reached to dental pulp.

  • Deep cavity to dental pulp so infection reached in bone through the  opening at the tip of the root. Sometime if the infection in the bone is not treated it will become pus patient will be having a swelling. Again if the treatment is not done and swelling is present for many days then the pus discharge will be there from the Gum and bone surrounding the affected tooth.
  • Mild to serious continuous tooth pain
  • Pain on chewing.
  • Required pain killer medicine for relief.
  • Treatment is commonly known as root canal treatment
  • In root canal treatment there are five stages
  1. Removal of caries and infected pulp tissue from the pulp chamber and root canal.
  2. Sealing of the root canal with appropriate material.
  3. Filling of the crown part of the tooth with appropriate material. At this stage tooth is restored and no pain is present.
  4. Cap cutting - After root canal treatment, the remaining wall of the tooth become so weak that while chewing it will fracture in the time. Hence tooth is slightly cut from all side and its measure is taken.
  5. Capping - In two or three appointments the cap trial and cap cementation is done. With proper care it will last till the day you die. I mean say root canal treatment is completed.
4) Cavity is reached to the break furcation. area.

  • Very deep tooth cavity
  • Some time there is pain sometimes there is no pain because the pulp is mostly dead.
  • If cavity is reached to the bone through the furcation area of the tooth
  • Treatment is removal of the tooth.
5) loss of upper tooth structure with decay only roots are remaining.

  • Roots of the teeth will be visible at the level of gum.
  • Mostly there is no pain
  • Treatment removal of the roots of the tooth.

Now we get the general idea about teeth with caries/decay and their different treatments. As you have seen at early stage of the tooth decay, treatment cost and time is less as compared to late stage. 

Hence, with regular dental check up and proper awareness, you can save time, money and have a healthy teeth.

It's a known fact since the beginning of the time that 90% people are lazy, ignorant and careless.
